Celebrating the Year-End Thrill with a Dong Thap Fishing Tour

The year 2025 was drawing to a close, and for a dedicated angler and travel enthusiast like me, there was only one way to truly savor the final moments and cast a hopeful line into the New Year 2026: a wild fishing trip in Vietnam with my closest friends. Our chosen destination? The magnificent Tram Chim National Park, a biodiversity hotspot nestled deep within the Mekong Delta.

This wasn’t just any ordinary escape; it was an ambitious one-day Mekong Delta Fishing Tour—a race against the clock to immerse ourselves in the vibrant, water-logged heart of Southern Vietnam and reel in some unforgettable catches.

The Dawn Patrol: Chasing the Sunrise to Tram Chim

The adventure kicked off in the pre-dawn darkness. At a staggering 2:30 AM, our dedicated car and expert local fishing in Viet Nam guide picked us up, trading the bright lights of Ho Chi Minh City for the quiet, misty highways leading to Dong Thap province. The early start was a necessity, a small sacrifice for the promise of prime fishing hours.

By 5:30 AM, the first blush of dawn was painting the sky as we arrived in Tram Chim town, fueling up with a hearty, traditional Vietnamese breakfast. Soon after, we made our way to the main attraction: Tram Chim National Park. This site is not only an ecological marvel but also one of Vietnam’s Ramsar sites, globally recognized for its unique, seasonally flooded grasslands and cajuput forests—a true jewel of the Mekong Delta River ecosystem.

The Wild Hook: Targeting the Treasures of the Mekong Delta

Stepping into the national park felt like entering another world. The air was fresh, carrying the scent of wild grass and damp earth, and the silence was only broken by the calls of unseen birds. This park is a testament to the biological richness of the Mekong Delta.

Our primary mission was, of course, the fishing in Tram Chim National Park. This habitat offers a unique challenge, requiring us to quickly master specialized Vietnamese fishing techniques—often involving simpler, more natural bait and patient casting into the densely vegetated waterways.

And the fish here are legendary! The park is a haven for several exciting native species that truly define the fishing in Mekong Delta experience:

  • The Mighty Carp: We specifically targeted various species of Carp (Cá Chép), known for their strong fight and often found lurking beneath the surface vegetation. Landing a sizable Carp in these wild waters is a genuine test of skill.

  • The Powerful Mekong Catfish: While the gigantic specimens are found in the main river, the smaller, native species of Mekong Catfish (Cá Tra) found here still offer a thrilling battle, famous for their relentless tug-of-war.

  • The Striking Indian Carp: Also known as Rohu (Cá Rô), this species is a prized catch for its sheer size and the power of its runs. It’s an absolute highlight of any serious fishing tour in Vietnam.

The excitement was palpable with every tug on the line. Each successful hook-up brought cheers, a testament to the thrill of conquering these wild, native species in their natural, protected environment. This authentic, wild Dong Thap Fishing Tour was everything we had hoped for.

The Ecosystem: A Feast for the Eyes and the Soul

Between casts, we took time to absorb the breathtaking natural beauty. Tram Chim National Park is an unparalleled spectacle of biodiversity. The cajuput trees stood sentinel in the water, their reflections shimmering. We spotted rare birds, including the majestic Sarus Crane (when in season), and witnessed the incredible density of the aquatic flora and fauna that sustain this ecosystem.

This realization—that we were fishing in a place so vital and pristine—added a layer of profound respect to our trip. The park’s commitment to preserving this flooded forest is why such phenomenal fishing in Vietnam is still possible.

Midday Bliss and the Final Cast

As midday approached, we didn’t retreat to a restaurant; instead, we enjoyed a simple, refreshing picnic lunch right in the forest. Sharing sandwiches and stories, surrounded by the sights and sounds of the national park, was an essential and deeply rewarding part of the adventure.

We continued fishing throughout the afternoon, our spirits undimmed by the tropical heat. Each friend had their moment of glory, reeling in a prized catch, securing bragging rights, and capturing photos that would last well into the new year.

The Farewell Cast and the Joyful Conclusion

As the clock approached 5:00 PM, it was time for our final, reluctant casts. We packed up our gear, leaving the waterways as pristine as we found them, our hearts full of the day’s successes and the stunning beauty of the Mekong Delta.

The drive back to Ho Chi Minh City, complete with a well-deserved dinner stop, was filled with animated replays of the day’s best battles—the one that got away, the biggest Carp, and the sheer joy of the collective adventure.
