Happy New Year 2026: Hooking Memories in the Mekong Delta – An Epic Barramundi Adventure Fishing Tour!
The calendar has turned, and what better way to welcome the happy new year 2026 than with a thrilling Barramundi adventure fishing tour deep in the heart of Southern Vietnam? As a seasoned angler and travel enthusiast, I can tell you that this 4-day escapade through the Mekong Delta with my closest buddies was more than just a fishing trip in Vietnam; it was a sensory explosion of culture, nature, and pure adrenaline.
If you’re looking for the ultimate Vietnam fishing trips 2026, pack your bags and join us, virtually, on this unforgettable journey.

Day 1: The Gateway to the Wild Mekong Delta River
Our adventure kicked off bright and early in Ho Chi Minh City, the bustling hub that quickly gave way to the serene landscapes of the Mekong Delta. The journey itself was a transition from urban chaos to tranquil countryside. Upon arrival in My Tho, the Mekong Delta tour began in earnest. We glided through the scenic, narrow canals on a traditional sampan, the rhythmic splash of the oars providing a meditative soundtrack.

The air was thick with the scent of earth and sweet fruit as we visited local artisans—watching a traditional brick kiln fire and tasting the famous coconut candy and liquid gold from a honey factory. But the highlight was definitely wandering through a lush fruit garden, plucking and savoring the incredibly fresh, sun-ripened tropical bounty.

After a satisfying local lunch, we pressed onward, chasing the sunset toward Ca Mau. The anticipation was palpable. Ca Mau is where the real action begins, and settling into our hotel that evening felt like the calm before the storm, fueling up on local cuisine for the epic fishing days ahead.
Day 2: The Barramundi Barrage in Ca Mau
The alarm was unnecessary; the sheer excitement had us up before the sun. Today was all about the Barramundi! Our target: the notorious Lates Calcarifer, a ferocious predatory fish known for its acrobatic fights. This region, where the fresh river water meets the sea, is prime brackish territory, making the fishing in Mekong Delta truly unique.
We arrived at our secret fishing spot, and within minutes, the rods were bent double. The strike of a Barramundi is electrifying—a powerful, aggressive jolt. We spent the morning in a blissful state of intense concentration and exhilaration, reeling in solid fish, many in the respectable 1.5kg to 5kg range, with the dream of hooking a 20kg behemoth. Besides the Barramundi, we were also lucky enough to land other characteristic species of the region like hefty Groupers, Sea Bream, and the feisty Mangrove Jack.

Lunch was the ultimate reward: a shore lunch of the fresh catch, cooked simply to showcase the delicate flavor of the fish we had just battled. It’s an experience that defines a Mekong Delta Fishing Tour. As the sun began its descent, we reluctantly headed back to Ca Mau city, already planning the next morning’s strategy. Fishing in Viet Nam doesn’t get any better than this!

Day 3: Dual Threats and a Scenic Drive to Can Tho
The third day offered a thrilling choice: more Barramundi or the addition of the equally challenging Snakehead (Ca Loc). My group split up: some pursued the mighty Barramundi again, while others sought the ambush predator that hides in the dense vegetation. The Snakehead’s explosive top-water strike is a sight to behold and a testament to the diverse fishing in Vietnam.

Again, the self-caught lunch was a celebration. The sheer joy of preparing and sharing a meal from the waters you’ve just fished creates an incredible bond. In the mid-afternoon, rods were packed, and we made the scenic transfer to Can Tho, the capital of the Western region.
We checked into a beautiful resort, a perfect blend of comfort and natural beauty, ready to explore the cultural side of the Delta. The evening was spent relaxing, reminiscing about the battles won, and enjoying the tranquil resort atmosphere—a perfect pause before the final day’s cultural immersion.

Day 4: Cultural Treasures and the Joyful Farewell
The final day offered two fantastic options, and my group chose a mix of both to maximize the experience.
Option 1: The Vibrancy of Can Tho
The early start was absolutely worth it. We set off by sampan at 5:30 AM to witness the spectacular Cai Rang floating market. This is the biggest wholesale floating market in the Mekong Delta River, a truly mesmerizing, kaleidoscopic scene of trading boats laden with colorful fruits and vegetables. We experienced the local life firsthand, sipping strong Vietnamese coffee right on the river, the air filled with the cheerful haggling of vendors. It was a chaotic, beautiful, and authentic slice of Vietnamese commerce.

Returning for breakfast, we checked out and made a vital cultural stop: the Binh Thuy ancient house. Stepping into this beautifully preserved French-colonial-era mansion, with its distinctive architecture and lush grounds, was like traveling back in time. It was a moment of peaceful reflection, admiring the elegance and history before the final leg of our journey.

Option 2: The Floating House Fishermen’s Life
For those who chose the second option (and myself for a quick cultural visit), the experience was centered in Vinh Long province, aboard a floating house. This was an incredible opportunity to engage in a unique local fishing style in Vietnam. Here, the target species shifted to the freshwater giants: the legendary Mekong Catfish, the hard-fighting Barbonymus fish, and the local Gray eel-catfish. Fishing from a floating house offered a genuine, intimate look into the daily life of the river communities—a truly immersive fishing tour in Vietnam.

Looking Ahead to a Prosperous New Year
As our comfortable transport whisked us back to Ho Chi Minh City, a profound sense of satisfaction settled over the group. This Mekong Delta Fishing Tour was the perfect blend of high-octane angling and rich cultural exploration. We kicked off the happy new year 2026 not with a party, but with an epic adventure—hooking massive Barramundi, exploring the bustling life of Cai Rang floating market, soaking in the history of Binh Thuy ancient house, and celebrating the natural beauty of the Mekong Delta River.
