From Mountains to the Sea: Adventure Fishing in Northern Vietnam

Northern Vietnam is a paradise for professional anglers while still being enjoyable and safe for the whole family, offering ideal weather and rich fishing grounds. From rivers, lakes, and streams to the sea, each landscape brings unique challenges. Anglers can target a wide variety of species using different techniques such as lure fishing, fly fishing, bottom fishing, or traditional local methods. This diversity makes every trip both exciting and unforgettable.

For family members who don’t fish, there are plenty of other activities: boat rides through scenic rivers, trekking in the mountains, cycling through rice fields, or simply relaxing and enjoying local culture, food, and festivals. This makes the journey not only a fishing trip but also a memorable holiday for everyone

 

DAY 1: HA NOI

·       Pick up at Noi Bai International Airport.

·       Transfer to hotel for check-in and rest after the flight.

·       Evening: join a Hanoi Old Quarter food tour – tasting signature dishes such as beef pho, bun cha, steamed rice rolls, banh mi, fried spring rolls, sweet soups, and egg coffee.

·       Brief introduction to the 15-day fishing program, checking personal equipment, and assisting guests with purchasing bait, lines, etc.

 

DAY 2: HANOI CITY TOUR

Morning: visit Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, Ba Dinh Square, One Pillar Pagoda, and the Temple of Literature.

Lunch at a local restaurant.

Afternoon: visit Hoan Kiem Lake, Ngoc Son Temple, and take a walking tour through the Old Quarter.

Time for fishing gear preparation and shopping.

 

DAY 3: HANOI – NINH BINH

• Depart Hanoi, drive ~2.5 hours to Ninh Binh.
• Lunch with local specialties such as mountain goat and crispy rice.
• Afternoon: boat trip in Tam Coc/Trang An, enjoying the stunning limestone scenery.
• Evening free to explore Ninh Binh city or rest.

DAY 4 : NINH BINH – FISHING & SIGHTSEEING

• Fishing experience in local lakes, streams, and rivers.

• Whole family visit Hoa Lu Ancient Capital, cycle through villages, explore traditional markets, enjoy a leisurely boat ride through rice paddies, join a local cooking class, or experience traditional handicraft workshops (such as embroidery or pottery) that are fun and suitable for all ages.

• Afternoon: group gathering to share fishing results.

 

DAY 5 : NINH BINH – HA LONG BAY

• Early departure for Ha Long (3.5–4 hrs).
• Lunch with fresh seafood in Ha Long.
• Afternoon: transfer by boat/speedboat to Ha Long Bay, check in to floating house/raft.
• Afternoon activities: rest and prepare for night fishing. Various fishing styles are possible here with diverse catches such as snapper, grouper, cobia, etc.
• Beside fishing, whole family can try swimming, kayaking, or relaxing on deck with panoramic views.
• Dinner: enjoy freshly caught seafood on the raft.

 

DAY 6 : HA LONG BAY – NIGHT FISHING

• Morning: kayaking, fishing, swimming, cave exploration, and beach visits.
• Lunch with freshly caught seafood on the raft.
• Afternoon & evening: fishing and squid fishing at night – best chances to encounter large fish.

      

DAY 7 : HA LONG BAY – BAC KAN – BA BE LAKE

• Return to Ha Long city.
• Lunch in Ha Long, then a long drive to Ba Be (Bac Kan).
• Evening: check in at lakeside homestay, dinner with local family.

 

DAY 8 : BA BE LAKE: FISHING & CULTURAL EXPERIENCE

• Full day fishing on Ba Be Lake:

• • Wooden boat with local fishermen, learning traditional techniques.
  • Possible catches: carp, grass carp, minnows, etc.
  • Options for lure fishing, fly fishing, and other methods.

• Beside fishing, whole family can take a scenic boat trip around Ba Be Lake, explore Dau Dang waterfall, or trek through Ba Be National Park with a local guide.
• Lunch on the boat or homestay (grilled lake fish, forest vegetables).
• Afternoon: Visit local Tay and Dao ethnic villages, learn about traditional stilt houses, weaving, and farming practices. Children can join local kids in simple folk games.
• Evening: cultural exchange, traditional music, corn wine with locals.

 

DAY 9 : BA BE → CAO BANG: BAN GIOC WATERFALL – NGUOM NGAO CAVE

• Morning: depart Ba Be for Cao Bang.
• Lunch en route.
• Afternoon: visit Ban Gioc Waterfall (on Vietnam–China border) and explore Nguom Ngao Cave with spectacular stalactites.
• Evening: check in hotel near waterfall.

 

DAY 10 : CAO BANG – HA GIANG

Morning: Visit to Cao Bang town or nearby villages.

Lunch on the way.

Afternoon: drive to Ha Giang with scenic stops.

Evening: check in hotel in Ha Giang city.

 

DAY 11: HA GIANG: DONG VAN KARST PLATEAU – MA PI LENG PASS

Morning: drive via Quan Ba, Yen Minh to Dong Van.

Lunch in Dong Van, explore the Old Quarter (market days if coinciding).

The Hmong King’s Palace
Built in the early 20th century in Sa Phin Valley (Dong Van, Ha Giang), this palace was the residence of the Hmong royal family led by King Vuong Chinh Duc. Its unique architecture combines Hmong, Chinese, and French styles, making it a remarkable cultural and historical site of the region.

Afternoon: conquer Ma Pi Leng Pass, admire emerald Nho Que River.

Evening: overnight in Dong Van or Meo Vac.

DAY 12: HA GIANG – BA VI

• Long drive from Ha Giang to Ba Vi, with scenic stops en route.
• Evening: check in hotel in Ba Vi.

 

DAY 13 : BA VI – HA NOI  

• Morning: visit Ba Vi National Park, hike forest trails, and visit Uncle Ho’s Temple on Tan Vien Peak.
• Fishing experience at a private lake with large species such as carp, grass carp, pacu, snakehead, etc.
• Afternoon: return to Hanoi and rest.

DAY 14 : HA NOI  

• Free for shopping or sightseeing in Hanoi.
• Optional catfish fishing at an outdoor fishing park near Hanoi.
• Evening: farewell dinner.

DAY 15 : HA NOI

• Free time until transfer to Noi Bai Airport.
• End of tour. Thanks you, see you next time.
