Tame Saigon’s Giant Monsters & Party on Halloween

Taming the Beasts of Saigon: An Epic Monster Fishing Adventure & Halloween Spooktacular in Vietnam

If you ask any serious monster fish angler what drives them, they will give you a single answer: the adrenaline rush of a bent rod against an unstoppable aquatic leviathan.

As an angler who has cast lines across the globe in search of the world’s most aggressive predatory species, Vietnam had been blinking brightly on my radar for months. When my international crew of fanatic anglers and I set out to explore Southern Vietnam, we weren’t just looking for standard sports fishing. We were seeking exotic giant freshwater monsters and explosive saltwater lure action—all conveniently accessible from the energetic metropolis of Ho Chi Minh City.

What we experienced over a high-octane week was beyond our wildest expectations: landing prehistoric giants, screaming drag reels, breathtaking strikes, and ending our journey immersed in Saigon’s electrifying Halloween festivities. Here is the story of our ultimate Vietnam fishing tour.

Chapter 1: Taming the Saltwater Monsters at Ón Saltwater Fishing Park

Our adventure began in An Thoi Dong, Can Gio, located just over 40 kilometers from the bustling center of Ho Chi Minh City. Our destination was the newly opened Ón Saltwater Fishing Park (located at 22 De Goc Tre). Spanning over 15 hectares of repurposed natural shrimp lagoons with intricate underwater terrain, this park is a lure fisherman’s paradise.

The moment we arrived, the pristine marine environment and strictly managed atmosphere impressed us. To guarantee a high-grade, elite fishing experience, the park strictly caps capacity to no more than 20 rods per day. Supported by hospitality-trained staff, we opted for a boat package with an English-speaking guide (priced at 1,500,000 VND/day) to paddle us right into the prime feeding zones where depths plunge down to 5 meters.

The action was non-stop. Cast after cast with topwater poppers and slow-sinking minnows yielded violent strikes. Ón is packed with aggressive saltwater game fish: Barramundi, Asian Sea Bass, Giant Trevally (GT), Groupers, Cobia, Barracuda, Tarpon, Ladyfish, Seabream, and Gray Eel-Catfish.

While the average fish size ranges from 3 kg to 8 kg, the real thrill lies in the unseen monsters hiding in the deep. My buddy Dan hooked into a monster 14 kg Barramundi that erupted out of the water, tail-dancing against the horizon while making his baitcaster reel scream for mercy. After an intense 15-minute battle of tactical drag-setting, we scooped the silver beast into the net. Hooked fair and square inside the mouth, Dan even earned a 1,000,000 VND bounty fish reward on the spot—an awesome touch by the park management!

With affordable daily passes starting at 400,000 VND for Catch & Release, Ón Saltwater Fishing Park has set a new benchmark for saltwater lure fishing in Southeast Asia.

Chapter 2: Heavy Tackle Battles at Bull Arena Fishing Park

Having tasted saltwater success, we pushed further east into the tranquil countryside of Suoi Giao Commune, Chau Duc District, Ba Ria – Vung Tau Province—about a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Saigon. Here lies Bull Arena Fishing Park, a legendary freshwater battleground covering over 17,000 m² with a massive 10,000 m² water surface.

Bull Arena is not a casual fishing pond; it is built for extreme freshwater trophy fishing. It houses some of the most sought-after river monsters on earth:

Partnering with Vietnam Fishing Tours, we booked a multi-day getaway and settled into one of Bull Arena’s 10 comfortable lakeside private rooms. Equipped with heavy-duty monster tackle, high-capacity baitrunner reels, and guidance from professional local fishing assistants, we set up for an unforgettable session.

The highlight came right as the sun began to dip. My heavy carp rod doubled over in an instant, the line tearing out at terrifying speed. I was locked in a brutal test of strength against an underwater locomotive. For nearly forty minutes, my muscles burned as I wrestled a behemoth Mekong Giant Catfish weighing over 42 kg. When we finally cradled this gentle giant in the oversized spoon-net for photos before a safe release, the feeling of accomplishment was unmatched. Landing a fish over 40 kg earned us an instant 1,000,000 VND cash prize from Bull Arena’s big catch reward program!

Between heavy fishing sessions, we recharged with fresh Vietnamese drip coffee, sampled local delicacies, and enjoyed outdoor BBQ dinners right by the water under a canopy of stars. Beyond the giant species, we even tried our hand at traditional Southern Vietnamese fishing techniques targeting native snakehead and climbing perch.

Chapter 3: From Monster Fish to Saigon’s Wild Halloween Night

After days of thrilling fights with freshwater giants and saltwater predators, our crew headed back into the glowing heart of Ho Chi Minh City. By perfect coincidence, our trip overlapped with Halloween, and Saigon knows how to throw an unforgettable street party!

Exchanging our mud-stained fishing jerseys for costume masks, we hit the streets to celebrate. Bui Vien Western Street (Pho Tay Bui Vien) was a roaring sea of music, glowing lights, and elaborate costumes. Thousands of locals and international travelers crowded the pedestrian strip, dancing outside vibrant pubs and draft beer spots.

We then wandered over to the spacious Nguyen Hue Pedestrian Street, where the atmosphere was family-friendly yet full of festive energy, filled with street performers, creative cosplayers, and pop-up photo booths. To cap off the night, we raised our glasses at one of Saigon’s premier rooftop bars overlooking the sprawling skyline and the Saigon River, swapping stories of our biggest catches against the backdrop of vibrant city lights.
